Posted on 2008-11-13 11:35:01

Introduction: SIOP-PODC started the NTP -PPO in India in 1997. 19 workshops were held & 500 pediatricians were trained including 18 at our institution. Evaluation was done by a pre and post-test but impact on the status of Pediatric Oncology has not been evaluated. Methods: We used NTP-PPO for teaching our residents. Existing services at our institution & the lectures allotted to Oncology in the academic programme participation in grand rounds number of papers ability of the faculty to carve out a "niche" for themselves number of residents selecting oncology as a career contribution of oncology patients to inpatient load number of applications received for the faculty posts was evaluated before & after the programme. Evaluation was done by instructor student demonstrations & by chart audits. Results: Lectures increased from 6 in a year to 11. The admissions were 4-6% of the total admissions &c now they are 9-13.5%. We have presented 14 papers in various conferences compared to 6 previously. 2 residents evinced interest in pediatric oncology. Faculty has gained recognition &c participated in all SlOP meetings in the last 5 years. India office of INCTR has been established. Administrators recognized the need of Oncology & established an excellent laboratory back up. 4 trained oncologists have applied for a faculty post. Mean period from the start of symptoms to diagnosis decreased from 48.5 + 11.35 days to 27.46 + 7.68. Doctors participating in shared care went up to 27 from 9. 10 of the original 18 people 3 years down the lane were assessed for attitudinal changes. Conclusions: Programmes impact can't be assessed directly. The increased awareness of the specialty and whether it has translated into better care for the patient is important. We have used alternative strategies for evaluation.
